Cleistocactus brookei, sometimes also called Cleistocactus brookeae, originates from the rocky regions of Bolivia. It grows in a slender, columnar shape, usually branching from the base. With age, the stems can reach an impressive height of up to 2 meters, but remain quite delicate at about 3 to 5 cm in diameter.
The columns are densely covered in a covering of short, bristly spines. The color varies from a light white-gray to a warm yellowish-brown.
The flowers are tubular and almost completely closed. They open only a tiny bit at the tip to allow hummingbirds access. They are a vibrant orange-red to vermilion, often with a soft yellowish or lighter sheen at the base of the tube. The flowers protrude almost horizontally from the columns and are often slightly S-shaped. They usually appear in large numbers along the upper sections of the stems, creating a striking contrast to the light-colored spines.
Plants about 3 cm in diameter, about 17 cm high
