The genus name Lapidaria derives from the Latin lapidarius, meaning "belonging to stones," an allusion to its stone-like appearance.
There is only one species, Lapidaria margarethae.
The plant forms compact, low clumps. Its leaves are thick, fleshy, and strongly angular—resembling polished stones or small pebbles. They are usually pale gray, bluish-white, or light pink.
It produces striking, pale yellow flowers that appear in late autumn and winter and open in sunshine.
It is relatively slow-growing and forms small cushions over time.
The species is endemic to southern Namibia and the adjacent arid regions of South Africa. There, it grows in extremely dry, stony soils.
