This plant, already described in 1886, is typically what is commonly referred to as a "cactus". The golden-yellow thorns have led to it being referred to as the "golden ball cactus". Because the thorns are very hard and can be painful, it is also called "mother-in-law's chair".
The plant is very attractive, even without flowers, which only appear on very old plants.
In 2014 the plant was renamed Kroenleinia grusonii.
