It is native to the mountainous regions of Mexico (specifically the state of Morelos, near Tepoztlán), where it grows at high altitudes on barren, mineral-rich soils.
The cactus is spherical when young but assumes a cylindrical (columnar) shape as it matures. Over time, it tends to produce numerous offsets at the base, forming dense, impressive clusters.
When grown indoors or in a greenhouse, the stems typically reach a height of 15 to 30 cm and a diameter of approximately 6 to 10 cm.
The plant is densely covered with fine, needle-like spines—usually a striking yellowish-white to golden-yellow—giving the cactus a very dense, bright appearance.
Typical of *Mammillaria* species, the flowers do not appear directly at the crown (apex); instead, in spring, they form a beautiful, continuous ring just below the top.
The small, bell-shaped flowers glow in vibrant shades of purple, dark pink, or magenta, creating a fantastic contrast with the pale spines.
