This mammillaria was first described in 1983 by Alfred B. Lau. Like the indicator species, it grows in the Mexican state of Oaxaca.
As the name suggests, the plant has golden-yellow marginal spines that contrast with the lush green body.
During the flowering period, which lasts a few weeks, the cactus is adorned with several wreaths of red flowers.
