Melocactus matanzanus is native to the island of Cuba, specifically the province of Matanzas. It grows there on calcareous hills.
The cactus has a spherical, slightly flattened body. It reaches a height of up to 9 cm and a diameter of up to 10 cm, making it a relatively small species.
Its most distinctive feature is the cephalium, a woolly, bristly structure at the tip of the cactus's body. It only forms on older, flowering specimens and is a kind of "crown" of fine bristles and white wool. The flowers sprout from this cephalium.
The flowers are small, funnel-shaped, and bright pink to magenta in color. They emerge from the cephalium and usually bloom for only a short time each day.
After flowering, small, berry-like fruits form that are pink or red in color.
Melocacti need to be kept warmer than other cacti, even during their dormant period. The temperature should not fall below 15°C.
