As early as 1827, this cactus was first described under the name Echinocactus sellowii. After that it was called Malacocarpus sellowii, Wigginsia sellowii and Notocactus sellowii. 1997 followed the last renaming to the current name Parodia sellowii.However, in many collections and publications it can still be found under the genus name Notocactus.
By the name of the German gardener and naturalist Friedrich Sellow is honored.
Originally this plant comes from the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
The yellow, silky shiny flowers reach diameters of 4 to 5 cm, the style is red.
