These plants were discovered by the renowned cactus collector Alfred B. Lau in Bolivia—specifically in the Vallegrande Province (Santa Cruz Department)—at an altitude of around 2,400 meters. They grow there in rocky, exposed high-altitude Andean valleys.
Initially solitary, the plant tends to form clusters (cushion-like growth) as it matures. The plant body is spherical to slightly cylindrical, lush green, and remains quite compact, with a diameter of just a few centimeters.
The areoles are situated on small tubercles and bear a dense covering of fine spines. These spines are generally whitish to yellowish-brown, giving the plant a bright, slightly shaggy appearance; in the wild, this serves as protection against the intense UV radiation found at high altitudes.
Numerous flowers appear from late spring to early summer, emerging from the base or the lower sides of the plant body. They are slender and funnel-shaped, glowing in shades ranging from vibrant orange to orange-red. The flowers are relatively large in proportion to the plant's small size.
